DC motors are used instead of AC motors because they provide many electrical feature suitable for traction system
Now basically DC series motor is used as a traction motor in train
Some of the feature or advantage are as follows,
Starting of dc motor is easy. Starting torque of motor is very high. Therefore acceleration of the motor is very high as compared to AC motors
Equipment used for dc motor , as well equipment of DC train are also lighter in weight and more efficient than AC motor.
Effect and interference of nearby communication line are less on transmission line
Speed control of DC motor are quite easy, and when motor are connected in parallel then it is also economical.
Electric braking (specially regenerative braking) is possible
Overload capacity of the DC motor is very high.
