What is Ferranti effect?

Writer's picture: Mohit DesaiMohit Desai

The effect in which the receiving end voltage is larger than the sending end voltage in a long-range transmission line (>200 Km) is known as Ferranti Effect. The main reason for this effect is the charging current (Capacitive current, Ic). We all know that the capacitance is uniformly distributed along the whole length of the line. When the load is a light load or no load, then the current drawn by the capacitance is more than the load current. This increases the receiving end voltage.
