What is electrical bushing?

Electrical bushings are the apparatus that is used to transmit power to inside the en-closer of electrical equipment. Bushings are used to provide insulation between the conductors and the equipment at the point from where conductor enters the enclosed parts of the machine ( It may be a transformer, synchronous machine, induction machine, circuit breakers, limiting reactors, power capacitors). Bushing is a conductor surrounded by graded insulation. A bushing is necessary when the conductors are taken out from the metallic tank at earth potential. As power is the product of voltage and current so insulation of the bushing should be capable to withstand the voltage it is applied.and its current-carrying conductor must be capable of carrying rated current without overheating the adjacent insulation. Bushing fails due to partial discharge and also due to the ageing effect as insulation level of bushing degrades with passage of time.
