Surges are an increase in power beyond what your household electrical system is designed for.
Surges can be of three types:
Destructive Surges - These type of surges generally occur outside of the house and can enter your house through the main power supply. These are a large amount of energy (normally Lightning) which can instantly damage your electrical equipment.
Dissipative Surges - These are high-frequency pulsations usually caused by failing or malfunctioning equipment. When a local power grid is shared between a household and a large factory having high ampere equipment, these surges occur. No big damage is done but it can cause damage in phone chargers.
Disruptive Surges - When you have two different types of equipment on the same breaker then you will observe this type of surges. These are not harmful but can cause a malfunction in your device for example, fans will run faster than usual.
