We know that the stator of an induction motor is directly connected to a three-phase supply. So, during the starting condition when the rotor speed is zero, the stator pulls 5-7 times the normal current from the supply. In small motors, this starting current is small but in big motors, the starting current is very large. So if a large current is drawn from the supply, the other devices connected to that supply will get affected. So to overcome this issue, starters were introduced between the motor and the supply. The main use of a starter is to supply low voltage in the starting and gradually increase the voltage.
There are different types of starters:
Direct Online Starter
Star-Delta Starter
Autotransformer Starter
Soft Starters
VFD Starters
Stator Resistance Starters
Slip Ring Motor starters
