In transmission lines we need to set up reactors (inductors) and capacitors to maintain power factor. A particular wave will go under differentiation and integration multiple times. And we know that differentiation and integration of a sine wave is a sine wave with different phase angle. If any other wave was chosen like square wave, differentiation and integration of a square wave is not a square wave and the waveform will not remain same throughout the transmission line. That's why we use sine wave.
